Kotka: A Jewel of the Sundarbans

Kotka is one of the most breathtaking tourist destinations in the Sundarbans, offering visitors a unique blend of natural beauty and thrilling wildlife experiences. Recognized as a UNESCO World Heritage site, Kotka serves as a sanctuary for wildlife, making it one of the top attractions in Bangladesh.

 

What Makes Kotka Special?

Visitors to Kotka can enjoy a jungle trail combined with an overnight stay amidst nature. The area is teeming with wildlife, with deer and monkeys commonly seen. On rare occasions, you might even spot the majestic Royal Bengal Tiger, as they are known to frequent areas where deer are abundant. Early morning boat safaris through the narrow river inlets offer excellent opportunities to observe wildlife in their natural habitat.

 

A Haven of Flora and Fauna

Like the rest of the Sundarbans, Kotka is rich in biodiversity, boasting around 245 genera and 334 plant species. The area is also a haven for bird enthusiasts, with more than 50 bird species recorded, including rare and endangered species such as the Grey-headed Fish Eagle, vultures, and hornbills.

 

Unique Features at Kotka

 

Wildlife Water Reservoir - A reservoir has been constructed by the forest authorities to provide fresh water for animals during the dry season.

Watchtower - The watchtower offers visitors a panoramic view of the lush forest, making it a must-visit spot.

Jamtola Beach - A half-hour walk from the watchtower leads to Jamtola Beach, a serene and picturesque sea beach. During winter, visitors often find tiger paw prints on the sands of Kotka Beach, adding an element of thrill to the visit.
